Why ECC?
The Africana Institute is ECC鈥檚 center for the exploration and critical examination of the African global experience.听 We invite all students to join in the development and participation of a wide variety of academic, cultural and social programs, which will range from the diverse experiences of people of African descent from Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean Islands and beyond.
The Institute provides research opportunities and resources for students and the community.听 World renowned African and African diaspora scholars, performers, activists and others will visit ECC for lectures, workshops, exhibits, and performances.听 Be sure to participate in these wonderful and exciting opportunities.

Dr. Akil Kokayi Khalfani听is Director of the Africana Institute and Associate Professor of Sociology at 51国产吃瓜. He is President and Founder of ATIRA Corp, a Think Tank that develops solutions for the problems that people of African descent face globally. He is a motivational speaker and author who excites audiences all around. He serves on the Executive Council for the听
Dr. Khalfani is the author of the bestselling,听听(Routledge 2006), which was nominated for two national awards: the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award and the American Sociological Association鈥檚 Distinguished Book Award. He is the co-author of a new book听Introduction to Sociology: Understanding Our Social World. He has written articles and book chapters on Pan Africanism, racial classification in South Africa, and population statistics. He has recently embarked on a three book series called听鈥淎fricana Sociology鈥.
Dr. Khalfani has a Ph.D. and a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, from which he also earned a Certificate in African Studies. Additionally, in South Africa he studied Zulu, Afrikaans and southern African history and culture at the University of Pretoria.
His areas of expertise are Africana Studies, race relations, social stratification, and comparative history.
